Jakub Sobczak is an artist from Suwałki. He graduated from the High School of Fine Arts in Supraśl and then got his master’s degree in graphic design at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Jakub has been working as an assistant at the Department of Graphic Design at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun for 2 years. His major interests include posters and illustrated books and his main sources of inspiration are folk art and historical graphic techniques.
My poster is a synthesis of two symbols — the so-called ‘tryzub’, the emblem of Ukraine, and the dove with an olive branch, a well-known symbol of peace created by Pablo Picasso after World War II, which also has biblical connotations. I cut the shape out of paper and digitally processed it afterwards. This idea was meant to loosely refer to the traditional folk cut-outs, very popular in the art of Eastern Slavic folklore.
